ASTR 310 is a one credit hour course intended for 4th-year undergraduate astronomy
students. It is required for majors.
Depending on the week, we
will be doing one of several various activities:
- Group discussion of a research paper from the
astronomical literature. The paper
will be chosen by popular vote from
a list of possibilities sent out a week prior
to the discussion date. Students should send suggestions for papers, as well as participate in the
voting for the paper to be read.
- Individual research presentations by students and
faculty.
- Discussions of best practices for research conduct.
- Having a research presentation by a
visiting astronomer.
The course is graded
pass/fail, based on the following criteria.
- Students must attend all sessions, unless an excused absence is arranged ahead of time
with the instructor.
- Students must give a 20
minute oral presentation (40 minutes for advanced graduate
students) on a topic of research. The scheduling and topic of the talks will be arranged in consultation with the
instructor.
- For weeks when a paper is being discussed, students must read the paper in advance and be prepared to lead a
group discussion of the paper.
- For weeks where there are student presentations, each
student must complete a talk evaluation form after the presentation, to give to the presenter at
the end of class.
- Full participation means: suggesting and voting on
papers for discussion, reading assigned papers,
contributing to discussions each week, giving assigned presentations, and
completing talk evaluation forms.
